Mariners are advised that a recent dive inspection located a boulder within the main channel leading to the inner harbour at Port Ellen, Isle of Islay. It is located approximately 25m off the southwest corner of the fish-quays in position 55° 37.629’N 006° 11.331’W. Minimum clearance depth over the boulder is approximately 3m.

On Tuesday 26th May 2015 contractors Aspect Land & Hydrographic Surveys Ltd will be conducting a detailed hydrographic survey in the vicinity of the boulder to inform plans for its later removal.

The survey is planned to be undertaken from a small workboat and will last for one day. The survey team supervisor will monitor VHF Channel 16 and will liaise with the port manager and Masters of the CalMac ferries to ensure there is no disruption to scheduled ferry services.

Mariners are advised to navigate with caution until this unmarked rock is removed and during survey operations all vessels navigating the survey area are advised to regulate their speed to minimise the effects of wash accordingly.
