Kennacraig traffic safety improvements: Frequently asked questions
CMAL is planning to carry out minor works at Kennacraig Ferry Terminal as part of the port’s Traffic Management Plan. We expect these works to take place in early 2026 to minimise disruption for visitors using the port.
The planned works will include:
- Installation of new traffic signs
- Installation of a new pedestrian guardrail
- Implementation of additional traffic calming measures
- Construction of a new footway and pedestrian crossing points
- Refreshing of existing road markings
In order to help us carry out these upgrades smoothly, we kindly ask that vehicles are not left in the areas of the car park shown on the following plan:
To help us prepare the site in advance of work beginning early in the new year, we are asking vehicle owners to vacate the marked areas of Kennacraig’s car park from 30 October 2025.
Once these areas are cleared, they will be cordoned off, and we will reach out to vehicle owners over the coming weeks to help manage this process smoothly.
If you have any further queries, please refer to the frequently asked questions below for additional information.
Frequently asked questions
What are we doing?
The planned works will include:
- Installation of new traffic signs
- Installation of a new pedestrian guardrail
- Implementation of additional traffic calming measures
- Construction of a new footway and pedestrian crossing points
- Refreshing of existing road markings
How can I help with preparing the port for these improvements?
To prepare the site for our contractor to begin work, we would appreciate your assistance in helping us vacate some areas of Kennacraig’s car park.
We appreciate that ferry service users often park their vehicles at Kennacraig for onward travel and apologise for any inconvenience these plans cause. We want to work with you to ensure that we can deliver these improvements with as little disruption as possible.
What areas are affected by the works?
Our contractor will require access to several areas of the car park to implement these improvements successfully. Keeping these areas clear of vehicles will help us to complete this project as quickly as possible and minimise the overall period of disruption at the port.
What if I can’t find a parking space outside of the marked areas?
We understand that, depending on how busy the car park is, it might be challenging to find an alternative space for your vehicle. However, CMAL’s project team is working closely with CalMac’s port staff at Kennacraig to assist customers in finding a suitable alternative location for their vehicle for the duration of this project.
If you are having difficulty, please speak to a member of CalMac staff at Kennacraig Ferry Terminal, who will be happy to assist you in relocating your vehicle to a suitable area.
When will this begin?
To help us prepare the site in advance of work beginning early in the new year, we are asking vehicle owners to vacate the marked areas of Kennacraig’s car park from 30 October 2025.
This is too short notice for me to relocate my vehicle—what should I do?
We appreciate that some ferry service users, especially those who park their vehicles at Kennacraig for longer periods, may find it difficult or inconvenient to find an alternative space by the end of October. We therefore ask that you contact us with any concerns or issues you may have so that we can work with port staff and our contractor to find a solution for you.
Why has this date been chosen?
We realise that asking vehicle owners to vacate the marked areas by the end of October for a project that will begin early in the new year may seem unnecessary; however, this is in an effort to ensure the site is prepared for the beginning of the works. It will allow us the opportunity to follow our notice-issuing processes, including making every effort to contact the owners of any vehicles that may appear to be abandoned.
How long are the works expected to last?
Once they begin, we do not anticipate that these safety improvement works will take more than a few weeks to be completed. However, we will be in a better position to confirm a more accurate duration of the works closer to the time, once the affected areas of the car park have been vacated in preparation.
How will you contact vehicle owners?
We will work with other organisations to try to identify vehicle owners and inform them that these works are taking place, and work with owners to relocate them. This may include working with CalMac and the DVLA to help deliver our notices.
You can help us in this effort by sharing our project page directly with anyone you know who may be parked at Kennacraig, or by posting it on any local community social media groups you are a part of. The project page can be found at: https://cmal.scot/kennacraig-tmp. Feel free to also display our poster on local community notice boards to help ensure we reach as many people as possible.
What will happen to vehicles that aren’t moved in time?
If any vehicles remain in the affected areas of the car park when our contractor is on site and ready to begin work, they may be temporarily relocated to allow work to proceed.
We hope, with your help and the assistance of our partner organisations, to contact all affected vehicle owners well in advance of these improvement works, thereby reducing the likelihood that vehicles will need to be temporarily relocated by our contractor.
As part of the traffic plan, are you planning to create more parking spaces?
The current scope of these minor works will address identified safety concerns at the port. The broader issue of car parking, both for staff and visitors, will not be addressed during this element of work, as this would form part of a larger project.
During the duration of the works, if you are having difficulty finding an alternative space, please speak to a member of CalMac staff at Kennacraig Ferry Terminal, who will be happy to assist you in relocating your vehicle to a suitable area.
