Active NTM 22/26

Mariners are advised that Phase 1 of the dredging works for Port Ellen development will begin on 24th June and is expected to last 2 weeks before dredging Phase 2 starts.

As seen in the drawing above, Mariners are requested to enter and exit the inner harbour North of the dredger. A listening watch on VHF CH 12+16 will be maintained by the Barge Master during daytime operational hours.

From the 24th June the two south facing berths of South Pier (ferry/linkspan berth) and Hard Face (Face of Pier) will be closed to all non-project related vessels, with exception of Barge Master consent.

Navigational controls that Mariners are requested to adhere to at all times during Phase 1 are:

  • The grey area is exclusive to the dredger and associated split hopper barge movements.
  • A minimum 20 m exclusion radius around the dredger exists for all non-works related vessels
  • No vessel is permitted to enter the exclusion zone without direct agreement from the Barge Master.
  • All vessels requiring access to, or departure from, the Port Ellen pontoons or inner harbour shall arrange passage agreement in advance from the Barge Master. 30 mins notice for arrival to Port Ellen and 15 minutes notice on departing the inner harbour.
  • Vessels may be requested to hold West of the channel or wait alongside until safe passage is available.
  • Transit through the active dredging area shall only be permitted when the dredger is in a safe condition, and the Barge Master confirms the route is clear.
  • Vessels wishing to access the pontoons and/or inner harbour are advised to pass the dredger and barge to the northern side [as indicated in orange in the drawing above].
  • Vessels shall pass at a maximum of 5 knots and maintain VHF Channel 12 listening watch while transiting the channel.

Mariners are advised to remind themselves of Chartered Depths and available tide to ensure 0.5 metres UKC is maintained at all times. The chartlet and live tide data can be found here Islay: Port Ellen | CMAL—Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd.

There will be several project related vessels operating within Kilnaughton Bay and Mariners are reminded to keep a good lookout and a listening watch on CH 12 whilst underway.

Unless otherwise promulgated, if this NTM is still marked as ‘Active’ it is still in force.
