Infrastructure works are progressing at Colintraive and Portavadie ferry terminals as part of CMAL’s Small Vessel Replacement Programme (SVRP). George Leslie Limited is delivering works to prepare both ports for the new fully electric vessels.
At Colintraive, dredging was completed between 12 and 15 October 2026, providing the under-keel clearance required for the new vessels. Shore power enabling works are planned to begin in November and will include a concrete plinth and maintenance platform for the cable management system, foundations for a new low-voltage switchroom and SSEN substation, and underground chambers, ducts and cable supports. During these works, the ferry will operate from the secondary slipway approximately 50 metres south of the terminal building. The current timetable is expected to continue, with only minor disruption around the port. ABB is expected to deliver the electrical works in spring 2027.
At Portavadie, George Leslie Limited mobilised on 29 September 2026. Work is under way to widen the marshalling area, alongside preparations to widen the slipway by approximately three metres. The programme also includes dredging, improvements to pedestrian access and new street lighting.
The Portavadie slipway will be closed from 19 October to 16 November 2026 to allow the dredging and slipway works to be completed safely. There will be no vehicle ferry service during this period. CalMac will operate a passenger-only service between Portavadie Marina and Tarbert (Loch Fyne) Marina, and passengers should check CalMac’s website for timetable and service updates.
The Variable Message Board (VMB) at Portavadie will also be unavailable for several weeks while it is relocated and provided with a new power supply. The VMB at the end of Glendaruel Road will however remain operational. We thank port users and local communities for their patience while these essential works are delivered. Further updates will be shared as the programme progresses.
