IVEW: Port Askaig Shore Power Update
As of the week commencing 27 April 2026, CMAL and SSEN, working in collaboration with Argyll and Bute Council and CalMac, are undertaking works at Port Askaig pier to install a new electrical connection to provide shore power for the new Islay vessels.
The works involve the installation of a new high‑voltage cable from the SSE substation at Keills along the road to the Port Askaig shore pier.
Initial works will take place at Port Askaig, where the cable will be installed along the Jura ferry lane. During this period, the Jura ferry lane will be closed, and Jura traffic will be directed to a dedicated lane within the ferry marshalling area. Works in this location are expected to take several weeks.
Once the Jura ferry lane has reopened, works will continue towards Keills. These will be carried out under temporary traffic management, including traffic lights.
The overall works are expected to last approximately four to five months. Anyone travelling to or from Port Askaig should expect some delays while the works are underway and should allow additional time for travel.
