Vacancy: Construction Project Site Supervisor
Salary: £39,334–£54,084 (Grade 6)
Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) owns vessels and harbour infrastructure necessary for vital ferry services serving many communities throughout Scotland. We have a strategic mandate to continue improving Scotland’s ferry network. We are looking for enthusiastic, innovative individuals to join us to support the development and maintenance of safe, efficient, reliable ports and harbours that serve Scotland’s islands.
We are recruiting for a Construction Project Site Supervisor on a fixed-term 2-year contract (subject to review and possible extension after this period) to help deliver our portfolio of works that adopt new technologies, upgrade facilities to accommodate new vessels, maintain existing infrastructure, and construct new ferry terminals.
The role
- Support with the site supervision duties for the delivery of Small Vessel Replacement Programme (SVRP) projects and other CMAL projects as required. SVRP project sites being progressed by CMAL are located across the west coast and north-west of Scotland, including Colintraive, Portavadie, Largs, Tarbert Loch Fyne, Tobermory, Lochaline and Kilchoan.
- Act as CMAL’s custodian for quality on site, and independently monitor construction works to ensure compliance with the scope of works.
- Work with CMAL’s Project Managers, external contractors and/or external engineering consultants and others as necessary.
- Work closely with the construction team on site to ensure agreed RAMS are in place, agree the Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) as required, and ensure relevant quality checks and tests are carried out.
- Conduct regular site inspections, identifying and eliminating potential safety hazards and handling on-site incidents in accordance with incident response protocols.
- Record and report any variations that may affect the forecast delivery dates, budget, or quality to the Project Manager.
- Support the project manager with regular progress updates, including weekly updates and monthly progress reports.
- Health & Safety, Quality & Environmental responsibilities including:
- Review of Principal Contractor and Sub-contractor RAMS.
- Ensuring projects are managed in compliance with the CDM Regulations.
- Ensuring HSE-related documents are kept up to date, submitted and filed appropriately.
- Liaising with third parties as required to ensure compliance with all standards, legislation, regulation and best practice.
Who are we looking for?
CMAL requires motivated, professional, and diligent people with a proactive and creative approach to problem solving and the ability to work flexibly, both within a team and autonomously. We are particularly looking for people with the following skills, experience, and attributes:
- Minimum of 5+ years’ experience using NEC3/NEC4 Engineering and Construction Contract (ECC) in a supervisor, clerk of works, or project management role.
- NVQ Level 4 or SVQ equivalent in Construction Site Supervision. A Degree or HNC/HND in Civil Engineering or Construction Management is desirable.
- Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) or Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) certification is desirable.
- CSCS card (Gold)
- Strong background in civil engineering or construction
- Proven understanding of CDM 2015 Regulations.
- Valid UK driving licence is essential for visiting multiple sites
- Ability to interpret complex technical drawings, specifications, and Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs).
Proactive, good communication and presentation skills, and be able to solve complex problems.

The work environment
The logistics of carrying out the job will require working away from home and travelling to remote islands and locations as required, with some flexible remote work, as mutually agreed, to serve the communities that rely on our infrastructure.
