Active No. SN/02

The chosen course for RoRo ferries, other large commercial vessels or cruise ships approaching or departing Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd ports is primarily determined by the prevailing weather conditions or local circumstances and navigational constraints. While every attempt is made by Masters to avoid selection of a course which may pass close to a recognised anchorage area there may be occasions when this is unavoidable.

Mariners are advised to be aware of the possibility of such situations occurring, particularly during periods of inclement weather, at the following recognised anchorage locations:

Castlebay, Barra: 56° 57.204N   007° 29.457W
Lochboisdale, South Uist : 57° 08.815N   007° 16.466W
Tarbert (Harris) : 57° 53.523N   006° 46.998W

It is requested mariners consider their proximity to ferry and other large vessel pier approach routes prior to anchoring in such a position that may potentially conflict with the passage of such vessels approaching or leaving any piers, jetties or quays within CMAL statutory harbour areas.

If intending to use the above listed anchorages mariners are further requested to make contact with the local CalMac Ferries Ltd port office to notify staff of their intentions and to maintain a radio watch during the period of anchoring or provide alternative details of how they can be contacted by the harbour operations staff in the event of any potential navigational issues arising.

Should any mariners experience near misses or other navigational issues within any CMAL harbour areas, it is requested the circumstances are reported to local CalMac harbour operations staff for further investigation.

Further details can be obtained using the contact details:
