NTM 02/23 Oban Bay Large Vessel Navigational Safety Broadcasts
Latitude 56º 24.877’N | Longitude 005º 28.838’W |
WGS 84 Datum | WGS 84 Datum |
Mariners may be aware of the Code of Practice for Oban Bay, North Channel & Sound of Kerrera that provides advice on how to navigate safely within the approaches and through Oban Bay.
http://obanharbour.scot/files/2114/9313/1556/oban_code_of_practice.pdf
The Code recommends that large vessels (defined as a vessel of more than 20 metres in length overall, and/or a vessel with a draft in excess of three metres) requiring to use the designated large vessel channels to enter or depart Oban Bay should make a warning broadcast on VHF Channel 16, followed by a brief safety announcement on VHF Channel 12.
It is requested the VHF calling procedure from the Oban Harbour website is used.
Masters of large vessels are further requested to ensure navigational safety broadcasts on channel 16 are clear and with a short but necessary delay before continuing their safety announcement on Channel 12, thereby allowing sufficient time for mariners to change to the necessary VHF channel to receive the message.
Unless otherwise promulgated, information regarding the current status of NTMs can be found at https://www.cmassets.co.uk/harbours/notice-to-mariners where, if the NTM is still marked as ‘Active’ it is still in force.
