Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) has awarded a contract to local building firm Lewis Builders to construct a new terminal building at Tarbert (Harris).

The new building will be the final stage in the multi-million-pound upgrade project at Tarbert Ferry Terminal, which recently saw the completion of the new pier and increased marshalling area.

Work to build the new terminal building will begin in spring 2022 and is anticipated to take a year to complete. The new pier is already in use by CalMac, and the upgraded marshalling area has increased vehicle capacity.

Andy Jones, buildings and property technical manager at CMAL said: “Following an open tender process, we have appointed local building company Lewis Builders to complete the new terminal project. They have local expert knowledge of the area and are the perfect partner to deliver the final part of this multi-million-pound project.”

John Macleod, project director at Lewis Builders said: “We welcome the contract to build the new terminal at Tarbert for CMAL. We have a team of 90 employees across several trades and will take great pride in building a facility that most of us will use regularly.”

John Quinn, senior civil engineer at CMAL said: “We’d like to thank the local community and businesses for their continued patience and support. This upgrade of facilities will benefit the communities and visitors to the Isle of Harris for years to come.”

CMAL is delivering significant vessel and harbour investment, backed by a £580 million commitment from the Scottish Government for an initial five-year period from 2021 to 2026.  Plans will deliver 21 new vessels for the fleet and multi-million-pound upgrade of harbour infrastructure over the next 10 years.  More information is online at www.cmassets.co.uk/investment
