Mariners may be aware of the Code of Practice for Oban Bay, North Channel & Sound of Kerrera that provides advice on how to navigate safely within the approaches and through Oban Bay.

The Code recommends that large vessels (defined as a vessel of more than 20 metres in length overall, and/or a vessel with a draft in excess of three metres) should make a warning broadcast on VHF Channel 16, followed by a brief safety announcement on VHF Channel 12, giving an ETA at Dunollie Light prior to entry or departure from the bay.

In recent weeks there have been several reports received from Mariners indicating there have been instances when some large vessel warnings have been indistinct or have not allowed sufficient time for Mariners to change VHF channels to listen to the subsequent broadcast navigation warning.

It is therefore requested all large vessels ensure their navigational safety broadcasts are clear and with a short but necessary delay before continuing their safety announcement on Channel 12 and thereby allow sufficient time for Mariners to change to the necessary VHF channel to receive the message.
