Port Ellen Terminal Development project reaches next construction milestone
Construction of the new terminal infrastructure at Port Ellen is set to reach another important milestone, with piling works due to begin on Monday, 31 August 2026.
Duration of operation
Phase 1
Percussion piling works will continue intermittently until mid-February 2027, with drilling works continuing until April 2027.
Phase 2
There will be a break in piling works from March 2027 to May 2027, with the Finger Pier and fixed ramp works commencing at the end of May 2027 and continuing until May 2028.
Fish Quay
The works will begin at the Fish Quay before progressing to the Commercial Quay, marking the next stage of marine construction at the port. They follow progress across the site including dredging, the import and placement of rock fill, and preparations for the arrival of piles and piling equipment.
Managing construction noise
The construction site will generally operate between 7.00am and 7.00pm, seven days a week. Piling works are expected to be among the more noticeable construction activities on site and will result in periods of increased noise. The project team will endeavour to restrict the noisiest activities to between 7.30am and 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Some work will also take place on Sundays; however, noisier activities on Sundays will be limited and undertaken only where operationally necessary. Noise levels will be proactively monitored throughout the piling programme to help manage the impact on the surrounding area.

Investing in Port Ellen
The Port Ellen Terminal Development will modernise the harbour and expand its landside infrastructure to support current and future ferry operations.
The wider project includes a new ferry berth, linkspan, and fixed ramp; an enhanced terminal building; expanded vehicle marshalling and parking facilities; and improvements for commercial and fishing vessels. The development will support safer, more resilient infrastructure while improving facilities for passengers, harbour users, and the local community.
Please note all works are being delivered in alignment with local authority approval.
