Update on the Craignure Passenger Access System (PAS)
In April 2026, a defect was identified on the Craignure Passenger Access System (PAS). In July, CMAL advised that the structure would not be brought back into service in its current form
CMAL and our specialist advisors, with operational input from CalMac, have now reviewed the potential to utilise part of the existing PAS structure to facilitate passenger access to vessels. However, it concluded that only a fraction of sailings would be accommodated with this method. It has therefore been determined that the existing structure is no longer fit for use in any form.
As owner of the PAS, CMAL has concluded that the most appropriate course of action is to dismantle and remove the structure from Craignure Pier at the earliest opportunity. This will allow a wide range of alternative passenger access options from the pier deck to be considered.
CMAL will now engage specialist suppliers to undertake the dismantling and removal works, and will provide further updates once plans have been developed. The work will be carefully planned to minimise further disruption.
Craignure Ferry Terminal is owned and operated by Argyll and Bute Council, while ferry services are provided by CalMac Ferries Limited.
Argyll and Bute Council and CalMac will continue to work together to identify an interim solution for foot passenger access until the new Craignure Pier is constructed. In the meantime, CalMac will continue to manage passenger access to MV Isle of Mull via the vehicle deck at an operational level.
We recognise that the current arrangements continue to impact the local community, businesses and those travelling through Craignure, particularly during the busier summer period. Frontline teams are working to manage operations as efficiently as possible while maintaining the safety of passengers, port staff and vessel crews.
Thank you for your ongoing patience and understanding, especially towards frontline staff.

—Fraser Wallace, Head of Harbour Operations, CalMac
