Port Ellen and Kennacraig Port improvements
Work is being undertaken at Port Ellen and Kennacraig harbours which will deliver improved berthing facilities and accommodate the new vessel MV Finlaggan.
Lochranza Sea Wall Repair Project
CMAL has announced that consulting engineers Atkins Ltd have been appointed to progress plans to replace part of the sea wall at Lochranza, which is currently in poor condition.
Hybrid Ferries Project
In February 2011 the Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Keith Brown confirmed Scottish Government funding to Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) for the Low Emission Hybrid Ferries Project, which will see the development of the world’s first sea going Roll On Roll Off vehicle and passenger diesel electric hybrid ferries in Scotland.

New ferry: MV Finlaggan
MV Finlaggan is currently being built in Remontowa yard in Gdansk, Poland. The new vessel is a modern Ro-Ro Euro Class B passenger ferry with capacity for 550 passengers and 85 cars, as well as coaches and commercial vehicles. Delivery of the new ferry is expected in Spring 2011 and will serve the Islay route between Port Ellen and Kennacraig.
Kennacraig Harbour: Sunken Barge Removal
Work is being undertaken at Kennacraig to remove the sunken barge from near the ferry berth. The five week project will get underway at the start of May 2010, and is vital to allow the new MV Finlaggan ferry currently being built to berth at the harbour in future.
Largs Pier Redevlopment
CMAL are undertaking a £6m project to rebuild the historic pier in Largs, Ayrshire. This project is vital in safeguarding the future of the pier which dates back to 1834. The new pier will provide shelter to the slipway, and overnight berthing for both the MV Loch Shira and MV Loch Riddon, the ferries operating on the route to the Isle of Cumbrae, as well as provide improved facilities for local fishermen and other pier users.
