		<description><![CDATA[ Following the closure of Port Ellen to ferry traffic at the end of March, the contractor, McLaughlin & Harvey (McL&H) has been progressing work at the site to reconstruct the pier.

The works were scheduled to complete in December 2011, however, due to unforeseen ground conditions, additional work on piping and recent adverse weather, the contractor has indicated that the works will now complete by March 2012. ]]></description>

We must stress that there is no adverse impact on ferry services from the terminal. ]]></description>

The reconstruction will replace the existing pier which is reaching the end of its serviceable life. The new pier has been designed to provide improved berthing facilities and will accommodate the new vessel MV FINLAGGAN, which is due to commence on the Islay route in spring 2011.

		<description><![CDATA[ Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) has been developing long term plans for harbour improvements at Port Ellen for some time in consultation with the local community, community groups and interested businesses.

In order to progress the long term plans CMAL are required to apply to Scottish Government for a Harbour Revision Order (HRO). This is the planning approval process for marine works. 		<title>CMAL response to heavy berthing at Port Ellen</title>

		<description><![CDATA[ Following the heavy berthing of MV Hebridean Isles at Port Ellen on Friday 5th November, an engineering inspection of the roundhead and pier was undertaken. Based on the recommendations of this inspection, CMAL has instructed Calmac Ferries Ltd to exercise caution when using the pier in adverse weather conditions and minimise use of the roundhead during berthing operations. 

The safety of all port users is a priority to CMAL and we will continue to monitor the pier structures while the pier remains in use. We will be working closely with CFL in this regard. Closure of the port for reconstruction work is planned for Spring 2011 and remains on programme. ]]></description>

Marine contractors Herbosch-Kiere will be using a large working barge, Waasland, to excavate and remove the old Thames barge which sank in the 1970’s. Project managed by consultant engineers Halcrow, the five week project will get underway at the beginning of May.
