Update on Pier Reconstruction Works at Port Ellen

Following the closure of Port Ellen to ferry traffic at the end of March, the contractor, McLaughlin & Harvey (McL&H) has been progressing work at the site to reconstruct the pier. The works were scheduled to complete in December 2011, however, due to unforeseen ground conditions, additional work on piping and recent adverse weather, the contractor has indicated that the works will now complete by March 2012.

These part-time appointments will be for 3 years and will run from 1 August 2011 to 31 July 2014. These posts are part-time and attract a remuneration of £308 per day for a time commitment of 2/3 days per month.

The berthing dolphin at Kennacraig was completed and successfully opened for use during the last week of April 2011. Graham Construction also completed all of the marine works to the south berth of the pier, which allowed the ferry services to revert to this berth and use the linkspan.

The Charterers of the Finlaggan, CalMac Ferries Limited, reported to CMAL there was a problem with the vessel’s machinery and that the vessel was making passage to Oban. This problem has been reported to the shipbuilder who are investigating the cause and arranging repairs to be undertaken. It is hoped the vessel can return to service very soon.

Sewerage pipe failure near Tobermory Ferry Terminal

CMAL has been made aware that a mains sewerage pipe has failed in the vicinity of Tobermory Ferry Terminal, Isle of Mull, which has resulted in some minor discharge into the water surrounding the terminal. Although full responsibility for the incident and repair rests solely with Scottish Water, CMAL will closely monitor progress and make a further statement in due course if required. We must stress that there is no adverse impact on ferry services from the terminal.

CMAL are pleased to announce that the new berthing dolphin at Kennacraig was opened for operation on Wednesday 27th April 2011. As well as the dolphin being opened, the south berth and linkspan were also re-opened in time for the evening sailing from Port Askaig to Kennacraig.

CMAL have taken the precautionary step of closing the Old Pierhead section of the Gott Bay Pier, Tiree, to all vessels, following an engineering inspection of the fendering. Graham Construction have now completed all the concreting works to the main structure and following a period of curing for the concrete, they will start attaching the fenders, bollards, copes, ladders and lights.

CMAL has today announced that the contract for the Kennacraig Pier upgrade project has been awarded to Graham Construction. The £3.44M contract was awarded following a Public Contracts Scotland tendering process and will predominantly comprise of the construction of a new berthing dolphin to accommodate the new vessel MV Finlaggan which is due in Scotland in April 2011.

CMAL response to heavy berthing at Port Ellen

Following the heavy berthing of MV Hebridean Isles at Port Ellen on Friday 5th November, an engineering inspection of the roundhead and pier was undertaken. Based on the recommendations of this inspection, CMAL has instructed Calmac Ferries Ltd to exercise caution when using the pier in adverse weather conditions and minimise use of the roundhead during berthing operations. The safety of all port users is a priority to CMAL and we will continue to monitor the pier structures while the pier remains in use. We will be working closely with CFL in this regard. Closure of the port for reconstruction work is planned for Spring 2011 and remains on programme.

The operation to remove the sunken barge near the entrance to Kennacraig Harbour has been successfully completed ahead of schedule and under budget. CMAL employed marine contractors Herbosch-Kiere who used their large working barge, Waasland, to excavate and remove the old Thames barge which sunk in the 1970’s.

Work set to begin to remove sunken barge from Kennacraig Harbour

Travellers using Kennacraig Ferry Terminal will soon see a new sight in the waters as work gets underway to remove a sunken barge near the ferry berth. Marine contractors Herbosch-Kiere will be using a large working barge, Waasland, to excavate and remove the old Thames barge which sank in the 1970’s. Project managed by consultant engineers Halcrow, the five week project will get underway at the beginning of May.

CMAL has published their findings from the Lismore STAG study, which they presented to residents of Port Appin and Lismore at the beginning of April. CMAL has announced that work to rebuild Largs Pier will get underway on Monday, 27th October, as contractor George Leslie Ltd arrives on site for the £6M project.
